Charter aircraft, class by class

When a whole aircraft is the right call, these are the classes to choose from: seats, range, cabin height and typical hourly cost.

Charter or a seat?

  • One or two travellers on a busy corridor: compare a semi-private seat with a turboprop or very light jet charter.
  • Three to five with normal luggage: a light jet charter is often close to the combined price of several seats, with your own timing.
  • Six or more, or bulky bags: a midsize or super-midsize jet, where the cost per person keeps falling.

Costs beyond the hourly rate

  • The 7.5% federal excise tax on domestic charter, and a segment fee of about $5 per passenger per leg.
  • Repositioning when the aircraft is based away from your departure airport.
  • Daily minimums of one to two billed hours on many aircraft.
  • Crew overnights, landing and handling fees, de-icing in winter, catering and Wi-Fi.
